Component waterproofing

We measure a fabric's resistance to water pressure, expressed in terms of the height of a water column in mm (based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. Components with a 5,000 mm rating can withstand the pressure of a 5,000 mm column of water (which is equivalent to a storm lasting 3 hours).

Waterproofing of the garment

Technologies: this garment has been validated in a shower test under 30 cm rain for 3 hours. This test reproduces the average conditions of a mountain storm.

Component breathability

Our rain poncho and cape ranges do not come with a waterproof/breathable membrane. Therefore, we recommend calm, gentle use to reduce perspiration rather than fast hiking!

Component water resistance

A fabric is water repellent when it allows water slide over its surface without seeping in. This prevents the fabric from soaking up water and keeps it lightweight, warm and breathable. The water repellent property is achieved by treating the fabric's exterior. This treatment needs to be renewed throughout the lifetime of the garment (every 3 washes). All Quechua ponchos and capes have a water-repellent treatment.

The Long Distance Hikers Poncho

A really good poncho which is more of a jacket than a poncho,as it has a double ended zip down the whole front of the jacket/poncho. It’s really well designed starting with a halo hood which also has an adjustable closure at your face. It also has tremendous pit zips to aid ventilation. It’s easily covered my six foot two inch body including my fifty litre pack. It doesn’t have any pockets so I suggest that you have a belly bag of some sort to carry anything that you might immediately need if you are wearing the poncho. There are two slits that are pocket size on either side of your waist. These I use to bring a cord or belt from inside and around my waist and through the slits and tie outside the front of the poncho to stop it billowing up in the wind. I have used this poncho in stormy conditions and found it coped brilliantly. I would like to have the choice of another colour but at least you will be seen if you have some Road walking. For the price it’s fantastic value. Buy one for your next long distance trail. It will keep you and your pack dry.

Superb poncho

This rain poncho has all the advantages of the normal Decathalon poncho, which has been my go-to rain gear for some years. But it also has a full-length zip, which obviates the need to pull it over one's head.

Essential kit in your backpack

For hillwalking in scotland this fabulous piece of kit is a godsend - you can be happily trekking in good weather and suddenly it’s raining heavily - it can quickly and easily be put on and pulled off as the weather changes (as it repeatedly does
